Types of Stress and How to Cope with Them

What is Stress?

Stress can be defined as a state of worrying or experiencing mental tension due to a difficult stimulus.

What are the types of stress? How can we cope with them?

Eustress is a positive stress which arises from exciting and challenging situations. Coping methods for Eustress include maintaining a positive mindset, seeking support and setting goals.

Distress is a negative stress caused by negative and disturbing situations like relationship problems, financial problems, toxicity in life etc. Coping mechanisms are seeking professional help if required, seeking support from trustworthy people, relaxation techniques and problem solving solutions.

Acute stress results from immediate pressures and demands. It can be coped with methods that include deep breathing, taking breaks, and engaging in activities that bring relief and peace to oneself.

Chronic stress is long-term stress caused by ongoing issues which affect a person's mental health in a more impactful manner. The coping methods are time management, seeking social support, prioritising, practising self-care and engaging in activities like exercising and meditation which help the body and mind relax.

Hypostress occurs when a person experiences low levels of stimulation or boredom. Coping techniques include engaging in new activities, doing what you love, taking up creative, intellectual and fun challenges, setting goals to gain purpose and motivation.

Hyperstress arises when a person is put through excessive amount of pressure and overwhelming demand and expectations. Coping mechanisms include prioritisation, time management, seeking support to manage workload and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

These are some of the coping strategies that can help an individual to cope with stress but coping methods can vary from each person so it is important to know what actually works for you.
