Developmental Disorders have a lot of effects on a person and one of the major factors is social interactions. Social interaction refers to the ability of an individual to appropriately communicate and interact with others; they often have difficulties in acquiring verbal communication skills but keep in mind not every person with a developmental disorder has the same level of difficulty.
It is difficult to empathize with something you know very little about and this may help you know better more about one of the difficulties that come with developmental disorders.
1. Autism Spectrum Disorder: This disorder affects the communication, social interaction, and behavior of an individual. People with ASD may fixate a lot for example repetitive hand moments, rocking back and forth, etc. They also have difficulties picking up social cues. As this is a spectrum the intensity of this may be different with different people. Research shows that autistic people find it easier to communicate with other autistic people than others because of their want to “fit in” It’s important to keep in mind to accept people as they are and reassure them that being different does not make you weird.
2. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: ADHD is a disorder where an individual has difficulty focusing and has impulsive behavior they also have difficulty regulating their emotions which can impact social interactions on a vast level. Like ASD, people with ADHD also tend to fidget a lot which makes social interactions difficult. Zoning out is a big part of ADHD which may make people with ADHD feel like it’s their fault that they are inattentive.
