Postpartum depression (PPD) is a form of depression that affects women after childbirth. While the process of childbirth can be beautiful, it is also known to be a challenging experience, from before, during, and after the birth. In this blog, we will discuss the causes, symptoms surrounding PPD.

What is PPD?

Postpartum depression is a form of depression that can occur after giving birth. Although PPD and major depression share some similarities, there are also some differences between the two. In simple terms postpartum depression is like a hangover that lasts for months.

What causes PPD?

Although there isn't a specific cause of PPD, it is believed to be a result of various factors, including hormonal changes, environmental factors, sleep deprivation, stress, physical changes due to childbirth, anxiety, and trust me this list goes on and on.

PPD is a serious mental disorder that not only affects the mother but also the child. Being a mom is not easy, and every minute comes with new challenges.

What are the symptoms of PPD?

PPD symptoms can differ from person to person, but here are some common symptoms experienced:

1. Feeling sad

2. Hopelessness

3. Anhedonia (loss of interest or pleasure in activities)

4. Changes in appetite

5. Difficulty bonding with the baby

6. Changes in sleep cycle

7. Self-harm thoughts or thoughts of harm to the baby

8. Fatigue

PPD is a serious and real condition that is not talked about enough. It is important to spread awareness about this. We have been told for decades about how wonderful and beautiful motherhood is, and how it is a unique feeling, beautiful and how maa banne ka ehsaas hota hai kuch khaas which is true. However, it does not acknowledge the fact that women go through many difficulties during the process.

"PPD is the ultimate test of the 'fake it 'til you make it' approach to life."
